The Columbia Fireflies are a Minor League Baseball team based in Columbia, South Carolina. The Fireflies are the Low-A Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals and they play in the Carolina League against in-state rival the Charleston RiverDogs (Tampa Bay Rays). The Fireflies play at Segra Park, which is located in the heart of the developing BullStreet District. The Fireflies name pays tribute to the synchronizing fireflies phenomenon that occurs at Congaree National Park each summer. The team, formerly known as the Savannah Sand Gnats (1995-2015), relocated from Savannah, Georgia, after the 2015 season marking 2016 as the Inaugural Season of Columbia Fireflies Baseball in the capital city. It is the only professional baseball team in Columbia, and the first since the Capital City Bombers moved to Greenville, South Carolina, after the 2004 season. The Fireflies take the field at Segra Park from April to September, playing 70 home games over the course of the season.
